            Dr Ranald Spiers


Dr Ranald Spiers is currently Chief Executive Officer, Middle East & Africa Region, International Power plc, based in Abu Dhabi, UAE. His regional responsibilities cover the development, financing, construction and operation of power and water desalination assets in the Middle East and Africa. The regional power development team has won six major power or power and water projects in the region since 2000, totalling nearly 7,000 MW and 400 MIGD with an enterprise value of around US$6billion  -  the 285 MW Al Kamil OCGT, Oman; the 1,500 MW, 100 MIGD Shuweihat S1 IWPP and the 2,200 MW, 167 MIGD Umm Al Nar IWPP, both in Abu Dhabi; four cogeneration projects totalling 1075 MW and 4.4 million lbs/hr of steam for Saudi Aramco, the 1,025 MW, 60 MIGD Ras Laffan B IWPP in Qatar; and most recently the acquisition of the 910 MW, 30 MIGD Hidd IWPP in Bahrain.

Prior to the de-merger of National Power PLC in October 2000, he was Regional Director for the Middle East and Southern Africa. He joined National Power in 1992, focusing on business development in Italy, Turkey, Holland and India. He previously spent twelve years with the BP Group – including four years in the USA - across a wide spectrum of industries, including advanced materials and aerospace, petrochemicals, detergents, natural gas and oil refining. He has a B.Sc in Chemistry from Edinburgh University, an MBA in International Business from City University in London, and a Ph.D in Chemistry from Pembroke College, Cambridge.
